Sabato 5 dicembre si celebra nel mondo, su iniziativa della Fao,  la Giornata del suolo;  l'Organizzazione dell'Onu per il cibo e l'agricoltura lo ricorda in forma virtuale, ribadendo " l'importanza della diversità dei suoli per i sistemi agroalimentari".

Il tema di quest'anno è "Manteniamo il suolo vivo, proteggiamo la biodiversità del suolo", al quale la Fao dedica il suo Rapporto.   "I suoli sono indispensabili per la vita sulla Terra" - afferma l'organizzazione - per garantire il futuro dei sistemi agroalimentari e l'accesso ai principali servizi ecosistemici".

Secondo la Fao nel mondo c'è "crescente consapevolezza" del valore della biodiversità relativa a piante e animali sulla superficie terrestre, mentre è ancora scarsa l'attenzione, appunto, alla  biodiversità del suolo, quello che si trova sotto i nostri piedi, e ai suoi "lavoratori", "dai batteri infinitesimali agli agili millepiedi ai viscidi lombrichi".

"5 December is the United Nations Observance that celebrates healthy soils for a food-secure future. This years' campaign  'Keep soil alive, Protect soil biodiversity'  urges us to focus our attention on the workers below ground - from tiny bacteria to agile millipedes and slimy earthworms - all of which contribute to processes that are indispensable to life on Earth.

These days biodiversity loss is a worry – and soil is also affected. Soil is home to more than 1/4 of our planet's biodiversity. Yet, we only know 1% of this universe. There are more living creatures in a single teaspoon of healthy soil than there are people on Earth. Soil organisms are responsible for many critical ecosystem processes, on which humans depend: from supporting plant growth, to storing carbon and being a vast reservoir for pharmaceuticals. But soil biodiversity is under pressure. Unsustainable soil management affects life belowground. Take action to protect soil biodiversity by digging in with us".

• Soil organisms process 25,000 kg of organic matter in a surface area equivalent to a soccer field, which is the weight of 25 cars.
